SMOKEY
STOVER Smokey
Stover (born: Huntsville, TX , November 16, 1928) is
legendary in the Houston, TX area where he spend most
of his career on suburban radio stations. He was performing
in Houston honky-tonks with his band at age 16. In
1949, he landed his first disc jockey job at KLVL ,
Pasadena, TX. He joined KRCT, Baytown, TX a year later.
In 1952 Hank Williams appeared on his radio show and
went to dinner with Stover and two contest winners.
During the 1950s, Stover worked at KBRZ, Freeport,
TX, KLOS, Albuquerque, NM, KCIJ, Shreveport, LA, and
WDAI, Meridian, MS. He joined KMOP, Tucson, AZ (1960-1968),
then quit radio to concentrate on performing and songwriting.
In 1970, Stover joined KRZE, Farmington, NM and retired
from radio after three years. In 1993 he joined KVST,
Conroe/Huntsville, TX for overnights, but left after
a year. In 1995, he worked for several months at WYXE,
Gallatin, TN. His songs have been recorded by George
Jones, Loretta Lynn and Linda Ronstadt, among others.
Smokey Stover was inducted into the Country Music D
J Hall of Fame in 2000. Smokey died of cancer on June
3, 2005.
