Joe
Hoppel (born: Nicktown, PA) spent thirty seven years
as the Country morning personality in Norfolk, Virginia.
He began his broadcasting career at the age of fifteen
as a part time air personality at WNCC Barnsboro, PA
(1950-1952) and later worked at WLOW Porstmouth, VA
(1952-1955) where he began playing Country music. He
then joined Country formatted WCMS (1955-2003), where
spent the majority of his career as the morning host.
His many awards include Country Music Association Music
Director of the Year, and an award from the CMA for
40 consecutive years in Country music broadcasting.
Joe is notable for his community service which benefited
organizations including The Rotary Club of Hampton
Roads, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Virginia
Beach Department of Social Services among many others.
He created “Tell Someone They’re Doing
A Good Job” week, which is celebrated on the
last full week before Christmas. He is known for collecting
photographs of himself with Country performers putting
him in a headlock. Joe Hoppel was inducted into the
Country Music D J Hall of Fame in 2002. Joe currently
presents traditional country and bluegrass favorites
on KICK 106 (WKCK), Norfolk, Virginia.
